Why Cosmetic Procedures Are Doubling In Numbers

By Alyssa McHugh, AmSpa
According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), the percentage of consumers considering a cosmetic medical procedure has almost doubled since 2013. Survey data from an ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologist Procedures revealed nearly 60 percent of consumers now say they are considering a cosmetic treatment, up from 30 percent just three years ago.
Why the sudden jump in popularity? ASDS President Naomi Lawrence, M.D., believes the urge to splurge could be a result of "patients trusting their dermatologists and the advanced techniques and cutting-edge technologies that will improve their appearance". Dermatologists have consecutively ranked number 1 out of the 14 factors influencing the decision to have a cosmetic procedure. They have also ranked first as the physician of choice in eight of the 10 treatment categories. These high levels of trust points to the fact that "board certification offers patients a peace of mind that their dermatologist has the expertise and training to provide the care for their skin and health needs."

About the Survey
ASDS's survey focused on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures. The first question was answered by patients whose cosmetic treatments were performed by dermatologists. The result? Majority of respondents in all 10 cosmetic treatment categories indicated their dermatologist is an ASDS member. In the second question, majority revealed that they would consider an ASDS member for their procedure. So why are more and more people adding cosmetic procedures to their lifestyle? Aside from the top reason of wanting to feel more confident with their looks, patients disclose wanting "to feel more attractive" and "look as young as I feel or better for my age".
Dermatologists are a key influence in the recent doubling of cosmetic procedures. With the medical spa and aesthetics industry changing more and more each day, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the growth of cosmetic procedures continue as doctor-patient trust increases and as education and resources become more available.
